Funding secured for Ron’s archive

In great news, we have secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to begin to share
and preserve Ron Gittins’ heritage. Over the next year, we will recruit and train six
volunteers to digitise a selection of Ron’s vast archive which includes source materials for
his art, sketches, paintings, sculptured objects, photographs and handwritten notes, some in
secret code.

This body of work will launch an online archive and using elements of this archive, we will
create a six-week exhibition in Birkenhead Town Centre of Ron’s artworks and archive
materials.

Also included in our project to accompany the archive, an Inspired by Ron’s Place
engagement programme will be delivered, working with invited mental health support
organisations to view the exhibition, inspiring them through creative activities to support
positive mental health and finally a programme of invited speakers to inform audiences
about ‘Outsider’ art/Art Brut, the links between art making and managing mental health; and
interpretations of the artworks within Ron’s Place that are representative of different art
periods and movements.

We are looking for volunteers to work on this project so, if you are interested, please get in
touch by sending an email to membership@wirralartsandculture.org
