Ron’s coat stars in Liverpool Biennial

Polish artist Katarzyna Perlak was so inspired by a visit to Ron’s Place last year that she chose to feature one of Ron Gittins’ hand-embellished military coats in a video work created for the Liverpool Biennial.

The Land Beneath Sleeps Lightly (2025) is a new, collaborative film set in the bedrooms, hallways and ballrooms of the Adelphi Hotel. She describes it as having a “non-linear, poetic narrative” that references the genre of horror to explore longing and Queer identity.

Ron’s coat appears on an unnerving figure wearing a white clown mask and a top hat, as a cast of seemingly otherworldly characters enjoy a hedonistic afternoon at the Adelphi, stuffing down afternoon tea and cavorting around the ballroom. You can see it upstairs at Open Eye Gallery until 14 September.
